JAN SMITH

Born in Mexico City, Jan is self-taught in photography. His work documents places that are exiting our contemporary social memory, because of their physical decay and a lack of general awareness. His relationship to photography is best described as anticipated grieving for what is perceived to be overlooked or forgotten.

His work is recognized by a variety of associations and media including multiple awards from the IPAs (International Photographers’ Association), and most recently as a winner of PDN's One Life. In 2010 he was nominated for best exhibition in PhotoImagen 2010. Jan’s recent exhibitions include the the Museum of Contemporary Art in Campinas, Brazil, and collectively in the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
