19.03 to 19.04 - How Many Pixels in a Wing | Vicente de Mello
Solo Exhibition

Galeria Eduardo H. Fernandes presents the exhibition

Vicente de Mello
Quantas ASAS tem um pixel? (How Many Wings in a Pixel?)

One night in Paris, 2007

The exhibition presents, for the first time, 7 works by the photographer Vicente de Mello that opens a space, within his work in black and white for digital photography, the photography of the real present. The title of the series relates to the question of up to what point the sensitivity of digital photography can be identified with the same appreciation as the analogical photography.

For Vicente de Mello, digital photography is the concrete proof of a much dreamt freedom shared by all photographers since the onset of photography in 1889; its immediatism in visualization, even with the much criticized delay in capturing, opens the possibility of an discussion with the present time in an unimaginable manner. The Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiorastami, in his book Two or Three Things I Know of Myself (Cosac and Naify, 2004), said ... God shows me things and people for what they are and eliminates the falsities that may confuse my perception.  And God created the digital camera... Abbas is talking about his low budget documentary film, but it can easily be applied to digital photography, a world fever that has chosen the idea of modern time.

Manipulated or not, the images in the exhibition indicate at first, a certain doubt regarding what is real and what may be digitally adulterated, and there resides the strangeness of these photographs, there is a duel between the observed and the image, for instance, the polyptych Space Probe is the result of this freedom of multiple shots, of the magic viewfinder that shows all, and a night of insomnia, when television, old companion for these moments, reflects the bedside lamp on the screen and the bolide-lamp started its trip in a virtual landscape, walking in inner atmosphere, on a path of 11 photographs... from NASA?
